Dromedary

The dromedary was domesticated in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula more than 5,000 years ago; its wild form disappeared thousands of years ago. Desert peoples use it for travel and carrying loads, drink its milk, and process its wool. It is well adapted to desert life; its wide, padded feet do not sink into the sand, and its slit-like nostrils can be closed. In the absence of food and water, it can lose up to 40% of its body weight. It lives in small herds consisting of one male, several females, and their offspring.
